Sardinien ist nicht nur die größte Insel Europas, sondern ist dafür bekannt, die besten Strände Europas zu haben. Tatsächlich es gibt einige, die sehen aus wie in der Karibik.

Campingplatz Area Sosta Porto San Paolo
Der Campingplatz ist 18 Minuten von Olbia entfernt und genau das Richtige für die erste Nacht. Die Hunde in Italien sind aktiv. Es gibt tatsächlich nur ca. 20 Stellplätze auf diesem einfachen, gepflasterten Campingplatz. Für die Toiletten muss man einen Euro zahlen. Noch besser: die Duschen befinden sich draußen. Das mag im Sommer kein Problem sein, doch im Frühling ist es doch sehr frisch, um unter freiem Himmel mit kaltem Wasser! zu duschen. In der Nebensaison zahlt man hier nur 15 Euro, in der Hauptsaison satte 30 Euro.
Der Strand von Porto San Paolo ist fußläufig erreichbar.
Olbia und Umgebung
Olbia als Stadt hat mich nicht sehr begeistert, es ist eine einfache Stadt, in der alles vorhanden ist, aber keine besonderen Bauten.
Sardinien ist nicht nur die größte Insel Europas, sondern ist dafür bekannt, die besten Strände Europas zu haben. Tatsächlich es gibt einige, die sehen aus wie in der Karibik.
Leider war das Wetter im April noch nicht ganz so gut, aber man kann erahnen, dass es einfach schön ist.
Strand Cala Brandinchi
Strand Cala Brandinchi: sind im Grunde zwei Strände, die von oben aussehen, wie ein Schnurbart. Der rechte von beiden Stränden ist nicht so schön. Der linke Strand vom Parkplatz ist dafür umso schöner. Hier kommt echtes Karibik Feeling auf.
Strand Capo Coda Callo
Strand Capo Coda Cavallo, auf der einen Seite (Wetterseite) rau und felsig, auf der anderen Seite ein schöner Sandstrand mit tollem Blick auf die Berge.
Nughare – Su Nuraxi in Barumini
Ein außergewöhnlicher Ort in der Inselmitte ist Nughare – Su Nuraxi in Barumini.
Er wurde 1500 Jahre v.Chr. erbaut. Erst als einzelner Turm, dann mit weiteren Türmen und einem Schutzwall erweitert. Später haben sich Menschen hier angesammelt. Die Mauern sind teilweise 3 Meter dick und man kann sogar mit einem Guide wirklich steile Treppen im Areal erklimmen. Im Sommer wird es auch für Musik und Festivals genutzt.
Es war ein schöner Ort mitten in der Natur, die Vögel zwitscherten und der Frühling hat sich bemerkbar gemacht.
Mit dem Eintrittsticket hat man ebenfalls Zugang zum kulturellen Zentrum (was ich beim besten Willen nicht gefunden habe) und in die Kirche (hierhin kann man laufen, aber es gibt gerade beim archäologischen Zentrum genug Parkplätze auch für WoMos).
Cagliari – Inselhauptstadt
Auf der via Roma gibt es viele touristische Sehenswürdigkeiten.
Ansonsten kann man sehr gut das dolce vita genießen: ein bisschen Schaufenster shoppen (oder richtig, um echtes italienisches Flair mit nach Hause zu nehmen) und eine traditionelle Pizza essen. Was soll ich sagen: yummie.
Park- Übernachtungsplatz: Cagliari Parking (Via Caboni, 13)
Ich habe mich für diesen Stellplatz entschieden. Die Nacht kostet 20 Euro, das ist ok für eine Stadt, die fussläufig erreichbar ist. Die Duschen kosten 50 Cent für 2 Minuten also Speedy Gonzales.
Strand Spaggia
Diesen Strand habe ich noch besucht, da ich leider nicht mehr viel Zeit hatte. Der ist in einem Industriegebiet, aber ich habe festgestellt, dass dort echt viele Leute waren. Im Sommer wahrscheinlich wie die ganze Insel propevoll.
Hafen Porto Torres
Von hier fahre ich mit Corsica Ferries nach Ajacchio. Eine andere und kurze Variante wäre St. Teresa Gallura nach Bonifacio gewesen.
Corsica Ferries ist etwas schneller und organisierter als Grimaldi, die 4 Stunden lange Überfahrt kostet 120 Euro. Ich bin ebenfalls 2 Stunden vorher da, wir können bereits eine Stunde eher an Bord, alles läuft nach Plan.
Überall ist der Greenpass obligatorisch, wer ihn nicht hat, muss sich testen lassen.
Von hier fahre ich noch 2 Stunden nach Porto Torres.
Testen für die Fährüberfahrt
Die Italiener nehmen es sehr genau mit dem green pass, so schauen sie auch bei der Fährüberfahrt danach. Doch getestet werden kann in fast jeder Apotheke (15 Euro). Dort wird auch gefragt, ob man einen green pass benötigt, damit bekommt man einen QR Code.
Empfehlungen zu Sardinien
Ich hatte gar nicht so viel Zeit und Sardinien ist die größte Insel Europas, eine Woche, besser zwei, sollte man schon einplanen. Empfehlungen von Freunden zur Insel sind:
- Porto Rotonda (schöne Stadt)
- Il rituale (Club in einer Höhle)
- Strände an der Ostküste, zum Beispiel an der Costa Rei und die Costa Smeralda
Sardinien und Korsika in der Nebensaison
Ab April geht erst die Saison auf beiden Inseln los. Vorher ist die Insel schön ruhig, teilweise fast ausgestorben.
Das ist schön zum Urlauben, aber gestaltet sich teilweise als schwierig bei der Suche nach Campingplätzen.
Mal schauen, ob ich auf Korsika mehr Glück habe.
Workation – arbeiten und reisen, doch zur Moderation bin ich in Deutschland.
Für meinen Job muss ich tatsächlich nach Deutschland fliegen. Ab April oder Mai gehen mehr Flieger, aber ich bin Ende März unterwegs. Ich entscheide mich für Ajacchio als Flughafen. Olbia oder Cagliari wären ebenfalls gegangen (Olbia bietet mit Easyjet mehrmals wöchentlich Direktflüge nach Berlin).
Mein Auto kann ich bei einer lieben Dame stehen lassen, auf einem Campingplatz, die extra für mich das Tor öffnen. Hier weiß ich, dass der Van sicher eine Woche stehen kann. Ich habe gelesen, man solle die Autos nicht einfach am Straßenrand parken, weil sie ggf. geklaut oder sogar angezündet werden können. Auch der Taxifahrer zum Flughafen rät mir, den Wagen lieber bewacht abzustellen. Und so tue ich es. Bye Bye schöne Mittelmeerinsel.

Ferry
There are 4 different ferry companies:
- Grimaldi

As well as arrival ports on Sardinia: - Olbia
- Cagliari (capital of the island)
- Santa Teresa di B (good for crossing to Corsica – Bonifacio, only one hour)
- Porto Torres
So it would be time for someone to program an app, because the choices are really huge and so are the prices, unfortunately.
With the car ferry you pay already once much more for the camper than a normal passenger without or even with car. There are usually also only selected dates where a crossing works.
Grimaldi Livorno – Olbia
I decided to go with Grimaldi with departure from Livorno.

For this I spent the night in Livorno on the camping Campeggio Pineta, via delle Mimose 12, Calambrone. The night cost 16€ in the low season. The sanitary facilities are very simple, on the other hand, the place impresses with the proximity to the port. In 12 minutes I was on the spot. Brilliant for a morning crossing, as I did (10 am).
Grimaldi Port Livorno – Olbia
One drives after the Navi to the port. In the last traffic circle take the first exit (the sign Grimaldi is very small) and shortly after again on the right side is the entrance (again very unrecognizable shown), otherwise it goes again on a driveway and you go further away.
Grimaldi writes you should be there at least 120 minutes before. That was I also and had to wait very long, because in addition our ferry had whole 2.5 hours of delay, which should probably occur more often. In the high season, however, it is probably very advisable to actually be there so early. Since the ferry was scheduled for 10 o’clock, I was already 8 o’clock on the spot.
Ferry crossing and documents
One must show the documents (ticket), identity card and green card. This is very important in Italy. In Italy you are only considered fully vaccinated if you have been vaccinated 3 times. If you have been vaccinated 2 times, the last vaccination may only be 6 months ago (unlike in Germany, where one year is valid). But with a current test result it all works.
Afterwards there is a sticker on the car.
Because of the delay, one can either cancel the trip or get a consumption coupon. I did not notice any of this.
After 2.5 hours the first cars start to move. I come with them to the truck deck. The lanes are marked out. It is not as narrow as I remember it with the car ferry to Corsica with my parents. You have to drive close to the car in front, but you can still get off comfortably. I had to drive up a steep ramp, but not reverse parking or anything like that.
You have to leave the car. On some ferries you can book a cabin (here too), on others I had read that you can stay in the car, but I didn’t find that.
The trip from Livorno to Olbia takes 10 hours and costs 70 euros (instead of 250€ with other providers, so it is worth an intensive research).
Time flies, finally I made a nice acquaintance and we chat for a while.
The rest of the time I work, what a view for the mobile office. Finally, my book is in the final stages.
Due to the delay of 2.5h we left only 12.30h and therefore arrive only 21.30h. I had called a campsite before and already informed that I will arrive later. Most places in Germany close already 18h. In Spain and Italy, they usually have until 19 or 20 clock open, but definitely not until 22 clock.
By phone, however, I can make myself known and as if by magic, the gate is opened for me.
Camping site
The campground is 18 minutes from Olbia and just right for the first night. The dogs in Italy are active. There are actually only about 20 pitches on this simple campsite. For the toilets you have to pay one Euro. Even better, the showers are outside. This may not be a problem in summer, but in spring it is a bit chilly to shower outdoors.
The beach is within walking distance.
Olbia and surroundings
Olbia as a city did not excite me very much.
However, Sardinia is not only the largest island in Europe, but is known for having the best beaches in Europe. In fact there are some that look like they are in the Caribbean.
Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t quite as good where I was, but you can guess that it just looked beautiful.

Beach Capo Coda Callo
Beach Capo Coda Cavallo, on one side (weather side) rough and rocky, on the other side a beautiful sandy beach with a great view of the mountains.
Nughare – Su Nuraxi in Barumini
An exceptional place in the center of the island is
It was built 1500 years before Christ. First as a single tower, then with other towers and a protective wall around it. Later, people accumulated on the site. Some of the walls are 3 meters thick and you can even walk along really steep stairs in the area with a guide. In the summer it is also used for music and festivals.
It was a beautiful place in the middle of nature, the birds were chirping and spring has made itself felt.
With the entrance ticket you also have access to the cultural center (which I have not found with the best will in the world) and in the church (here you can walk, but there are just at the archaeological center enough parking spaces also for WoMos).
Cagliari
Since I do not have so much time on Sardinia, I use the time and go to the 40 minutes distant Cagliari, the island capital.
On the via Roma there are many tourist attractions.
Otherwise, you can very well enjoy the dolce vita: a little shopping and eat a traditional pizza. What can I say: yummie

I still visited this beach, because unfortunately I didn’t have much time left. It is in an industrial area, but I noticed that there were really many people. In the summer probably like the whole island propevoll.
From here I drive another 2 hours to Porto Torres.
Port Porto Torres
From here I go with Corsica Ferries to Ajacchio. Another and short variant would have been St. Teresa Gallura to Bonifacio.
Corsica Ferries is a little faster and more organized than Grimaldi, the 4 hour crossing costs 120 euros. I am also 2 hours before there, we can already an hour earlier on board, everything goes according to plan.
Everywhere the green pass is mandatory, who does not have it, must be tested.
Testing for the ferry crossing
The Italians take it very carefully with the green pass, so they also look for it during the ferry crossing. But it can be tested in almost every pharmacy (15 euros). There you will also be asked if you need a green pass, so you get a QR code.
Recommendations for Sardinia
I did not have so much time and Sardinia is the largest island in Europe, one week, better two, one should already plan. Recommendations from friends to the island are:
- Porto Rotonda (beautiful city)
- Il rituale (club in a cave)
- Beaches on the east coast, for example the Costa Rei and the Costa Smeralda
Sardinia and Corsica in the low season
From April only the season starts on both islands. Before that the island is nice and quiet, partly almost extinct.
That is nice to vacation, but turns out to be partly difficult in the search for campsites.
Let’s see if I have more luck on Corsica.
For my job I actually have to fly to Germany. There are more flights starting in April or May, but I’ll be on the road by the end of March. I’m deciding on Ajacchio as my airport. Olbia or Cagliari would have gone as well (Olbia has direct flights to Berlin several times a week with Easyjet).
I can leave my car with a dear lady, on a campsite, who open the gate especially for me. Here I know that the van can safely stand a week. I have read, one should not park the cars simply at the roadside, because they can be stolen if necessary or even set on fire. Also the cab driver to the airport advises me to park the car rather guarded. And so I do it. Bye Bye beautiful Mediterranean island.
